Standard methods

Brain: search across every solved case.

Brain is a database of your company's closed cases that you search in your own words: you ask whether you have solved a similar problem before, and the answer shows the source it comes from. If the answer is not in your data, SolveR says so and does not guess.

When to ask Brain, and when to open a case

Ask Brain before you start a new case: have you had a similar problem before, which cause was confirmed back then and which action worked. The answer tells you where to start. Anyone who works on cases can ask: a quality engineer before the analysis, an engineer before a change on the line, or a quality manager before a meeting. When the cause needs confirming and the actions need carrying out, you open a case in the method that fits the problem.

  • 8D for a customer complaint, a safety issue or a problem that keeps coming back.
  • 4-Step for an internal deviation the engineer closes alone.
  • PDCA when you want to test an idea the answer gave you.

One question, today and with SolveR

Typical case: before starting a new case, a quality engineer asks which scrap causes on one line you have already confirmed and which actions worked back then.

TodayWith SolveR
The engineer searches SharePoint, Excel and e-mail for the time you had this before. The engineer types the question in their own words, the way they would ask a colleague.
They call the colleague who was there at the time, if that person is still with the company. The answer comes from the company's closed cases and from the 8D and FMEA archive we brought in at onboarding.
A figure from memory goes into the meeting, and later nobody knows where it came from.Every answer shows its source: a document, a measurement or an earlier case.
If there is no old case, the engineer never finds out and keeps searching. If the answer is not in the data, SolveR says so and does not guess, and the engineer opens a new case.

The case is an illustration written for this page.

What you get

An answer to a question asked in your own words, with the source it comes from next to it: a document, a measurement or an earlier case. The engineer checks the source before using the answer on a new case. Where there is no data, the answer says so, so you know the case is new. Because the source sits next to the answer, you can show it in a meeting or to an auditor, and everyone can see where it comes from.

What Brain searches

Every closed case of your company, and the 8D and FMEA archive we bring into the knowledge base at onboarding. So the answer comes from your own plant, from cases your team has already solved.

From question to source

  1. QuestionYou ask in your own words
  2. AnswerFrom your company's closed cases
  3. SourceA document, a measurement or an earlier case

The question can be short, such as "cracks on the housing after welding", or a whole sentence, the way you would write to a colleague.

One knowledge base for every method

Into the knowledge base flow confirmed causes, actions that worked, completed validations, prevention that holds and experiments from PDCA. Every closed case adds to it, so the next question has more cases to draw its answer from. Every method writes into the same base.

Data stays in the EU, never used to train AI models: Security & Architecture.

Why plants lose what they know is covered in our article on knowledge management in manufacturing.

How long the searching takes

Engineers spent on average 47 minutes per case only finding old reports, data and notes before the analysis could start.

Questions about Brain

What is a lessons learned database in manufacturing quality?

A collection of closed cases with their causes, their actions and what the team learned from them, so the next team can use it before a new analysis. Some 8D forms include it in step D7. In SolveR it is made up of your company's closed cases, and you search it in your own words.

How do you avoid repeat defects?

Before a new case, check whether you have had a similar defect before, which cause was confirmed back then and which action worked. In Brain you ask this in your own words and get an answer with its source. You then solve the new case in the method that fits the problem and close it with a record, so that someone else finds it next time.

Can Brain search our old 8D reports?

Yes. At onboarding we bring your 8D and FMEA archive into the knowledge base, so Brain also searches the cases you solved before you started working with SolveR.

How is Brain different from searching SharePoint or a shared folder?

A folder search gives you a list of files, and you look for the answer in them yourself. You ask Brain in your own words, and the answer comes from your company's closed cases and shows the source it comes from. If the answer is not in your data, it says so.

Is our data used to train AI models?

No. Your data is never used to train AI models, and it stays in the EU. More on Security & Architecture.

Other methods

Every team picks the method that fits the problem, and one knowledge base stands behind all of them.
